The UMBC Graduate School offers Master's degrees, doctoral degree programs, and graduate certificate programs in the natural and social sciences, engineering, public policy, and arts and humanities. UMBC's first graduate programs were started in 1970 with a masters program in Applied Mathematics; the first Masters degrees were awarded to Applied Mathematics graduates in 1973. In 1976, Applied Mathematics began the university's first Ph.D. program. In 1985, UMBC's graduate school merged with University of Maryland, Baltimore to create the University of Maryland Graduate School, Baltimore (UMGSB).
