It started with strange taps, then progressed to disembodied speech. One day, the perpetrator revealed himself: a small, furry creature that resembled a mongoose. The Irvings named him Jack and treated him as a pet, but the creature declared that his name was Gef (pronounced &#8220;Jeff&#8221;) and that he was no pet &#8212; he was the eighth wonder of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-black-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"background-color:#c5bed061\">\n<p>&#8220;I am [a] freak. I have hands and I have feet. And if you saw me you would be paralyzed, petrified, mummified, turned into a pillar of salt.&#8221; <\/p>\n<cite>Gef, recalled by Mr. Irving, quoted by Nandor Fodor in &#8220;My Diary in the House of the Talking Mongoose,&#8221; pg. 4<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Gef took up residence in the rafters (which he called his &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/library.umbc.edu\/specialcollections\/garrett\/curiosities-and-oddities\/gef\/gefs-sanctum\/\">sanctum<\/a>&#8220;) and quickly became a notable member of the Irving household, taking a particular liking to Voirrey. Gef liked to joke, gossip, and poke fun at the other residents of Doarlish Cashen. Tales of his antics gained him notoriety throughout the area, and he was dubbed the &#8220;Dalby Spook&#8221; after the nearby hamlet of Dalby. Over the years of his haunting, he would move and throw objects, eat the Irving&#8217;s food, and kill animals, including over 200 rabbits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Few people ever witnessed Gef for themselves; the only recorded pictures of Gef were taken by Voirrey. During his stay at Doarlish Cashen, parapsychologist Nandor Fodor never interacted with or even caught a glimpse of Gef. His writings were almost entirely based on accounts from the Irving family, plus some of the locals Gef interacted with. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gef never definitively explained exactly who or what he was. He said he was a marsh mongoose born in India in 1852, making him around 80 years old at the time of his first appearance. (The maximum life expectancy of a marsh mongoose is about 20 years.) On some occasions, Gef attributed his actions to Hindu magic. This might reflect on exoticized stereotypes of the time period. (For more on this, see: <a href=\"https:\/\/library.umbc.edu\/specialcollections\/garrett\/spiritualism\/religion-and-belief\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1030\">Religion and Belief<\/a>.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Theories<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Several theories have been suggested to solve the mystery of Gef the Talking Mongoose. Harry Price, who investigated the <a href=\"https:\/\/library.umbc.edu\/specialcollections\/garrett\/hauntings\/borley-rectory\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"909\">Borley Rectory<\/a>, was skeptical, finding that Gef&#8217;s fur was identical to the Irving family&#8217;s dog Mona, and suggested that Mona was helping Voirrey hunt rabbits. In a letter to Nandor Fodor, Clara S. Potter (the wife of humanist Charles Francis Potter) makes many suggestions from Spiritualistic and psychological bases, but ultimately believes it was a hoax, which might have been accomplished through ventriloquism or a trained ferret. Some thought Gef could be a form of supernatural entity such as a <a href=\"https:\/\/library.umbc.edu\/specialcollections\/garrett\/hauntings\/poltergeists\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1711\">poltergeist<\/a>. Nandor Fodor was unable to come to a definitive conclusion, disappointed he never got to speak to Gef during his investigation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Irvings denied that Gef was a hoax but were not certain that he was actually a mongoose. Mrs. Irving thought that Gef had to be a human &#8212; with a super-human brain &#8212; in animal form. Was Gef a ghost, a hoax, a psychological manifestation, or something else?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mystery and absurdity surrounding Gef&#8217;s existence has earned him a spot in popular culture. Jef says that he is an animal and an Indian mongoose. He flouts the idea that he is a spirit. He is just &quot;a little extra, extra clever mongoose.&quot; Let us suppose that this is the truth. What is there about Jef&#039;s doings and life which conflicts with the idea that he could be a mongoose. 1. He does not eat mongoose food. Could that be explained that if Jef can speak, as he appears to be, he is slowly humanizing himself. The fact that he is an animal may give him an inferiority complex. Consciously unconsciously he would adapt the ways of men. The easiest unconscious adaptation is the food. Mentally he is passing into the human kingdom. There would be a reaction physically as well. To a polecat which he found one day in a rabbit hole, significantly he referred thus: &quot;There is an enemy in, a blasted polecat&quot; 2. He speaks and is extremely intelligent. There have been talking dogs and calculating horses. When the Elberfeld horses were taught complicated mathematical operations, they showed extremely rapid progress as soon as they mastered the elementaries. May we not witness in Jef the same blossoming out of intelligence? The Elberfeld horses never rose above the intelligence of a 10 years old child. Jef has learned a lot and uses big words. But his knowledge consists of odd bits just as the knowledge of a precocious child would. 3. Jef can read. There is some evidence that Jef visits a school three miles away. He also used to accompany Voirrey to school. He often told the Irvings that he watches things from tree-tops and from window sills. He has extremely sharp eyesight. At the school, three miles away, they teach the tonic sol-fa. It was obviously here that Jef learned it. May he not have seen children standing before the blackboard and being taught writing and reading? He can read both print and writing. One day, Mr. Irving was reading out a letter because he wanted to know what was in it. It was a letter from Morrison. Mr. Irving skipped a passage. Jef immediately stopped him and told him that he had left out something. Further evidence that Jef listened at the school is to be found in the fact that when he got his first ball he bounced it in the attic in the same way as children do. When he missed, he shouted, just as the children, &quot;Dash!&quot; Mr. Irving tested him. He put his finger on the picture of a Rover motorcar and asked Jef what that was. He answered: &#039;Dog&#039;. On another occasion, Mr. Irving put his finger on the picture of Anna May Wong. Jef answered: &#039;Weng Fu&#039;. I took a penny from my pocket, tossed it up and placed it on the window ledge. It was tail. As soon as I came into the room, Geff shouted: &#039;Tails&#039;. I tossed again. He guessed correctly. The third time I did not toss. I left the penny as it was. Geff said: &#039;You did not turn the penny&#039; (What was Geff&#039;s voice like?) Very high, screechy sort. I never heard a voice like that before. I don&#039;t know what animal could give it. Will took a penny next, went upstairs and put it on a chair. When he went up again the penny was gone. Later it was put back. This took place in Voirrey&#039;s bedroom. During the penny trick, Voirrey was in the kitchen near the window from where the porch window is not visible, Mr. Irving near the fire place and Mrs. Irving was sitting on the sofa. Mr. Irving took us up into Voirrey&#039;s bedroom and showed us the fasten saying that Geff sometimes shuts Voirrey into the room so that she cannot get out. Geff was asked to do it. Voirrey went into her room. Mr. Irving motioned to Will to step to the kitchen door and look up the staircase. Geff heard him moving and shouted: &#039;You are sneaking&#039;. When he came back we heard a screechy sound. We went up and found the door shut on Voirrey. Mr. Irving once winked at me from the fire place. Instantly, Geff shouted: &#039;You are winking&#039; Will Cubbon: I did the penny trick in the kitchen at the far end window. It made no difference. Geff guessed right. I threw a rubber ball into the loft through the hole in the ceiling in Voirrey&#039;s room. As soon as I stepped out of the room the rubber ball was thrown back. When I went down the stairs, Geff spit upon my back. I don&#039;t know where he was when he spat. But I heard it. It was a tiny squirt. Harry Hall: My cousin, Edith Bateman from Toronto was staying with us with her baby. She sung the tune: Daisy, Butter cup. Geff said that he heard this song in our house. Geff swears awfully. He asked Will: &#039;Can you drive a steamroller&#039;. Will said &quot;Yes.&quot; Geff answered &quot;You, young bug, you would put it over the hedge&#039; Will Cubbon: He told us to clear to hell. Several times he said: I&#039;ll wet on your heads.
