Administrative\/Biographical Note<\/h1>\n

Mark Rice (1954-2019) was a photography collector. Rice and his partner, Ken Kohn (1958-1994), were motivated to collect photographs of the male form in response to the lack of representation of, and lack of dialogue about the male nude in art, and as a means to examine concepts of masculinity and the male form not solely dependent on the representation of genitalia. Rice later began collecting vintage physique photography (ca. 1940 through 1970), also known as “beefcake” photographs. Portions of the collection are available at UMBC and the Palm Springs Art Museum in Palm Springs, California. <\/p>\n

Processing Note<\/h2>\n

Collection unprocessed. Included in Spring 2011 MSS\/PHMS collection project. The photographs formed the basis of an exibition in the UMBC Library Gallery in Fall 2017, “Man, Idea, Image: Photographs of Men from the Mark Rice Collection.” The exhibition was curated by Visual Arts professor Dr. James Smalls. <\/p>\n
