Abstract:<\/td>\nThis extensive collection of records from the Africana Studies department includes: alphabetical department files, budget files, research and grant projects, department chair meeting files, Faculty Senate minutes, Undergraduate and Graduate Council minutes, course materials and outlines, admission files, and alumni records. Student records and staff personnel files are included, but not available for research use. A significant portion of the records are from Professor Emerita Dr. Daphne Harrison, founding faculty member and chair of the department.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

A formal department of African American Studies at UMBC was created in 1970 and began offering a B.A. degree program in African American Studies to students in 1972.<\/p>\n

This collection was transferred from the Africana Studies department in 1997 and the Black Student Union in 1999. Accessions: UARC 1997-18, UARC 1997-21, UARC 1999-16, UARC Photos-05.<\/p>\n

Processing Note<\/h2>\n

Initial processing was completed by Project Archivist Jeff Karr in 2015. The records have been sorted and arranged based on folder name and subject information. University publications relating to Africana Studies are available under the call number UPUB A2.<\/p>\n

Course materials include descriptions, proposals for new courses, catalog entries and changes, syllabi (grouped by semester) schedules and textbook adoptions. The program proposals relate primarily to efforts in the late 1970s to establish a Master\u2019s program in African-American studies and reflect inter-campus rivalries within the University system.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
