Administrative\/Biographical Note<\/h1>\n

George Cuikshank (September 27, 1792- Februrary 1, 18780 was born in London, England. His father, Isaac Cruikshank, was one of the leading caricaturists of the 1790s and George worked as his father’s apprentice and assistant. George’s brother, Isaac Robert, also followed in his father’s footsteps as a caricaturist and illustrator. George Cruikshank started to focus on book illustrations. His illustrations range from his first major work, Egans Life in London to Dickens’ Oliver Twist. After 1850, Cruikshank’s focus changed to his obsession with temperance and anti-smoking. Cruikshank developed palsy later in his life and his work declined in quality. Cruikshank died in 1878. (Bibliography based on Albert Cohn’s George Cruikshank: A Catalogue Raisonne).<\/p>\n
