Here is a snapshot of some key events from 2017-2026, courtesy of the <a href=\"https:\/\/umbc.edu\/magazine-home\/\">UMBC Magazine<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spring 2018, the <a href=\"https:\/\/umbc.edu\/stories\/new-house-of-grit-doesnt-disappoint\/\">highly anticipated Event Center opened on campus<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">March 2018, <a href=\"https:\/\/umbc.edu\/stories\/shining-moments-umbc-mens-basketball-makes-history\/\">UMBC beats UVA (74-54) to become the first No. 16 seed team to best a No. 1 seed in an NCAA men\u2019s tournament<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">August 2019, the <a href=\"https:\/\/umbc.edu\/stories\/9-features-of-the-new-ilsb-not-to-miss\/\">Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Building opens<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spring 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/umbc.edu\/stories\/rewriting-the-rules-of-academia-in-the-age-of-covid-19\/\">UMBC campus community adapted to remote learning and research<\/a> and then <a href=\"https:\/\/umbc.edu\/stories\/umbc-announces-return-to-vibrant-on-campus-community-for-fall-2021\/\">celebrated our return in Fall 2021<\/a>. TIME honored <a href=\"https:\/\/umbc.edu\/stories\/hero-of-the-year-time-honors-umbc-alum-kizzmekia-corbett-covid-19-vaccine-leader\/\">UMBC alumni Kizzmekia Corbett as Hero of the Year<\/a> for her leadership in developing the COVID-19 vaccine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spring 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/umbc.edu\/stories\/hrabowski-retirement\/\">Freeman Hrabowski announces retirement from UMBC<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/umbc.edu\/stories\/umbc-ascends-to-the-nations-highest-level-as-a-research-university\/\">UMBC is ranked an R1 research institution<\/a> by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">August 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/umbc.edu\/stories\/valerie-sheares-ashby-named-next-president-of-umbc\/\">Valerie Sheares Ashby named next President of UMBC<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UMBC&#8217;s history continues on!
