Out & About

Cruikshank spent his entire life in London, privy to its varied neighborhoods, parks, streets, scenes and spectacles. This collection contains his artwork from such publications as Punch and Judy, Greenwich Hospital, Sunday in London, and his large-scale prints from Mayhew’s Great Exhibition of 1851, which can be found in full here and originally sold for 15 shillings/set.

Cruikshank sketched London in sundry states, from the lively and crowded Sunday market to the calm suburbs, raucous pub life and fancy soirees, morning promenades, puppet shows, and once-in-a-lifetime exhibitions. Regardless of social class or status, people were out and about in the streets of London and Cruikshank etched them all.
