The House of Knocks and Bumps, pg. 7

Typewritten manuscript, page 2, "The House of Knocks and Bumps" by Daniel Lehmann The text reads: After this, the knocks were heard at many different times and places in the house. Every night, they would start at 9:30, and would continue until about 11 P.M. This happened every night without fail until the day, September 3, that Dr. Osis and I were there. We stayed until shortly after 10 P.M., and no knocks occurred. However, they broke out again, about ten minutes after we left. Such action - or lack of action - has been observed in other cases, and was explained by Dr. Nandor Fodor in his book, The Haunted Mind (New York, 1959), in this way: The appearance of scientific observers upon the scene of a haunted house "changes the prevailing emotional atmosphere within the house. Hosts and ghosts show their best behavior...If the haunted parties are not at their worst, little or nothing distinguishes their house from non-haunted houses." On the day before we arrived, physical movements and the smashing of lamps, etc., had begun. Before that, the disturbances had been limited to knocks and noises. The events reported were the following: Wednesday, September 2, Number 1. 3 P.M., Location of the persons: Father and mother in the kitchen, Julia out of the house, Alice in the living room; Ash trays moved from tables to floor in living room Number 2. 3:30 P.M. - father out of the house, mother and Julia in the kitchen, Alice in the living room: loud bang and pictures fell off the living room wall, by stairway Number 3. 7:30 P.M., father and Alice in the kitchen, Mother and Julia in the living room , loaf of bread moved from shelf to floor in kitchen Number 4. 10:30 P.M., father at the door of bedroom, mother and Julia in the living room, Alice in bed in bedroom, lamp fell over and broke in bed room (main floor) Number 5. 10:45 P.M., Another lamp fell over and was caught by father, in bedroom (neighbors and visitors were also present for 4 and 5)
