New Times, 1978

Preview Issue of The Runner, New Times. April 3, 1978 Beyond ESP by Carol Caldwell A cartoon in the style of superhero comics shows a military leader reporting "Mr. President The Russians have just psychokinetically disarmed our warheads!!" The preisdent is shown at his desk, slamming his fist and shouting "This is a job for superpsychic!"

The US and the Soviet Union took interest in ESP during the Cold War as a possible espionage or war tactic. From 1972 until 1992, Stanford Research Institute (now SRI International) conducted parapsychological research, testing remote viewing and psychokinesis. The research has been criticized for methodological flaws which affected the data.
