The Disputed Fingerprints

Two photomicrographs of fingerprints placed side by side. The left fingerprint is labeled "A--Walter." The right fingerprint is labeled "B--Dr. X." A caption at the bottom reads: "The disputed fingerprints of Walter and Margery's dentist."

These photomicrographs are from the personal scrapbook of Nandor Fodor. The attached caption reads, “The disputed fingerprints of Walter and Margery’s dentist.” During a sitting, “Walter” was said to produce a fingerprint (shown on the left) in dental wax. However, in 1935, the American Society for Psychical Research announced that the resulting fingerprint was a near-identical match to that of Crandon’s dentist (shown on the right), who had been present during the sitting. This evidence fueled existing skepticism of Crandon’s abilities.
