The Scale Experiments

Two photographs taken in close succession and placed side by side. Both images show a group of people sitting with joined hands and closed eyes in a circle around a table with a scale. In the first photograph, there is nothing on the scale and it is balanced. In the second photograph, a clear, cylindrical object is on one side of the scale, causing it to be off-balance.

These images are from Nandor Fodor’s personal scrapbook. They show Margery Crandon conducting an experiment involving a scale. The attached caption reads, “A cylinder which was invisible to normal eyesight photographed by quartz lens (which is sensitive to ultra-violet rays) in the Margery scale experiments. It was said to be a spirit instrument, having a suctional effect on the pan of the scale which should have been in total balance.”

Super-physical suction cylinder, Folder “Margery”, Box D, Eileen J. Garrett Parapsychology Foundation Collection, Collection 331, Special Collections, University of Maryland, Baltimore County (Baltimore, MD).
