  • Prepayment is required before image delivery.
  • Images may not be altered in any form without permission.
  • Reproduction materials are not to be resold.
  • Credit lines must appear with published images and audiovisual materials.

Reproductions

Special Collections provides reproduction services in the form of photocopies, digital scans, and copy stand digital photographs. All reproduction materials remain property of UMBC. Due to the fragile nature of the materials, reproduction is done on a case-by-case basis and is subject to the discretion of the Special Collections staff, based on the condition of the item, its size, any donor-imposed restrictions, and copyright law.

In-house reproductions (from original sources, printed materials, or the web) are made for research and private study only, and are not for resale. They may not be transferred, recopied, broadcast or published in print or digital form without first obtaining permission to do so. Please see below for instructions on obtaining permission to publish.

Publication and Permissions

Publication includes the following media: print, internet, digital, video, film, and exhibition. It is the user’s responsibility to obtain necessary permissions and pay for the use of copyrighted materials. The user must secure permission from UMBC and the copyright owner before reproducing or publishing any of the Special Collections holdings. Publication fees are assessed by UMBC as the owner of the physical collection material and must be distinguished from any fees that might be charged by the copyright holder. If UMBC owns the copyrights or collection rights, a specific statement from UMBC giving permission to publish is required. Permissions are for one-time use only. If UMBC is not the copyrights holder, rights must be obtained from the rights owner.

To request permission to publish Special Collections material, please contact speccoll@umbc.edu or 410.455.2353.

Credit Lines

A credit line must accompany use of our materials. For photographs, please use the following credit line: “Courtesy of the [Collection Name], the Photography Collections, University of Maryland, Baltimore County.” Generally, in print and on websites, the credit line must appear with the image. In film and video productions, the credit line must appear with the picture credits. In exhibitions, the credit line must appear with the photograph.

For all other materials, please use the following credit line, inserting the actual name of the collection where the brackets appear: “[Collection Name]. Special Collections, University of Maryland, Baltimore County.” Specific citation requirements are listed in the finding aid for the archival collection, if available.
