Tom Klinkowstein (b. 1950), is an artist and new media design professor at Pratt Institute and Hofstra University. He holds a B.S. in Photography from the Rochester Institute of Technology and an M.S. in Television, Radio, and Film from Syracuse University. His work has been shown in art centers, museums, and galleries throughout the world, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Venice Biennale in Venice, Italy. Mr. Klinkowstein’s work also can be found in the archive of the LIMA Media Art Foundation in The Netherlands and the Museum of Modern Art, New York; his three meter long digital artwork, “A Networked Designer’s Critical Path: 1990-2090" was shown at the Fifth Avenue (New York) Gallery of the American Institute of Graphic Design. Klinkowstein is also president of Media A, an innovation, design, and consulting group in New York. Between 1979 and 1990, Klinkowstein pioneered the field of telecommunications or telematic art, which uses mediated telecommunications networks to produce art works. While living and working in Amsterdam, Klinkowstein produced performance and installation artworks that included using radio and television programs as well as fax machines to transmit art internationally. The works often referenced corporate symbols and logos associated with consumption habits in suburban America that were beginning to infiltrate the global market.
