Administrative/Biographical Note

The Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) program at UMBC was founded in 1976. It combined the previously existing departments of Theatre, Art, Dance, Music, and Screen Arts. Of these, only Theatre had previously offered a degree program. Students in these fields received degrees in Visual and Performing Arts with a concentration in Art, Dance, Film/Video, Music, or Theatre (the Theatre Department also continued to offer an independent degree in Theatre). The Art and Film/Video concentrations were combined to form the Visual Arts concentration in 1979. The program also offered an interdisciplinary major in Visual and Performing Arts. The InterArts program, the Imaging Research Center Fellows, and the Linehan Artist Scholar Program were part of the VPA program. The Visual Arts department established an independent major in Visual Arts in 1999, and the Dance and Music departments followed suit in 2001. The Visual and Performing Arts program was suspended in 2008 and discontinued in 2010.

Received via transfer from Department of Dance in 1998. Accessions: UARC 1998-14. No future transfers to this collection are expected from this department.

Collection unprocessed. University publications relating to Visual and Performing Arts are available under the call number UPUB V1. Records from the Ethnomusicology and Theatre departments were transferred seperately and are not located in this collection.
