| Abstract: | This microscope was produced by Carl Zeiss and belonged to American physiologist Margaret Adaline Reed Lewis (1881-1970). The microscope is housed in a custom storage box and is accompanied by oculars, objectives, a haemocytometer, a hencycytometer, and other accessories. A Zeiss key is in the box’s lock and features a stylized “Z” bow. An engraved plate on the storage box reads, “Margaret Reed, Columbia University N.Y.” |

Administrative/Biographical Note
Margaret Adaline Reed Lewis (1881-1970) was an American physiologist, teacher, collaborator, and research associate. She worked at the Carnegie Institute of Washington, Johns Hopkins University and the Wistar Institute of Anatomy and Biology. She also taught at several colleges in New York City. Lewis acquired the Carl Zeiss microscope while lecturing at Barnard College (1905-10).

Provenance Information
The microscope was donated in January 2011 by Dr. Leonard Hayflick, University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Hayflick loaned the microscope to the American Society for Cell Biology for their 50th anniversary conference in Phildelphia, Pennsylvania. At the conclusion of the conference, the microscope was transported to UMBC by ASCB staff.
