Administrative/Biographical Note

The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Glee club was founded in October 1914 by Baltimore-area employees of the railroad with their stated purpose being “to stimulate interest in good music, to provide healthful and cultural recreation for the members and their friends, and to promote sociability and good fellowship.” Working under conductor Hobart Smock, the club grew quickly, and by April 1915 had around 50 members representing over 20 departments within the railroad. The Glee Club performed at professional and social events and put on winter and spring concerts each year. The club eventually added some non-employee members, recorded at least one record for Victor in 1927, and in 1929 began competitive singing, winning first prize in class B at the Associated Glee Clubs of America’s triennial competition. The club had a long history and was active until at least the early 1970s.

Collection is unprocessed. In 2015, the collection was rehoused and the folder list was created by student assistant Flora Kirk under the supervision of Special Collections Librarian Susan Graham.
