Abstract:The Edwin Remsberg Collection consists of digital image, audio, and video files made between 2007 and 2021, documenting folklife activities sponsored by the Maryland State Arts Council. Remsberg served as official photographer for the Maryland Traditions program of the Maryland State Arts Council from 2007 to 2021. In this role, Remsberg documented people, places, art works, and performances representing community-based, living cultural traditions in the state of Maryland. Topics include Folklife Apprenticeship teams and Heritage Award winners.

Administrative/Biographical Note

Edwin Remsberg is a professional photographer based in Maryland making documentary images in the photojournalism tradition. He received a B.S. in photojournalism from the University of Maryland, College Park. Remsberg’s career began as an intern at the Baltimore News American newspaper in 1985. He was a staff photographer for The Baltimore Sun from 1986-1989 before shifting to freelance photography, shooting pictures for magazines and corporate clients. Remsberg’s photographs appear regularly in regional and national magazines. In 1987 his photograph of the Amtrak disaster at Chase, Maryland was chosen by Life magazine for their “Pictures of the Year” issue and was later reprinted in Life’s “Pictures of the Decade.” He founded and directs the company Edwin Remsberg Photographs, which consists of photographers Edwin Remsberg and Lena McBean.

Provenance Information

This collection was transferred to Special Collections by Ryan Koons on behalf of the Maryland State Arts Council and in collaboration with Edwin Remsberg. Prior to the transfer, MSAC staff organized the files into their current arrangement. Edwin Remsberg originally delivered the files to MSAC as they were created on a regular basis from 2007 to 2021. Accession MSS2020-08.

The original digital transfer of materials was completed in 2021 by Laurainne Ojo-Ohikuare. In 2022, Acadia Roher completed a digital transfer of additional materials and prepared a finding aid. The file directory established by MSAC was not altered.
