Abstract:From the Civil Rights Movement to Black Lives Matter: Oral Histories of the Lived Experience in Baltimore is a 2021 Interdisciplinary CoLab Project lef by Dr. Nancy Kusmaul, a UMBC professor in the Department of Social Work. The collection consists of a series of oral history interviews with Baltimore community leaders and social justice organizers detailing their contributions to, experiences with, and thoughts on the 1960s Civil Rights movement to the present day Black Lives Matter movement.

Scope & Content

Oral Histories are organized under three themes: Capturing History: The Importance of Archival and Oral History Work, which features an interview with Louis S. Diggs. Reporting a Movement: Present-Day Media Coverage and Perspectives on Social Injustices, which features and interview with Marc Steiner. Making a Change: Direct- Action Organizing and Advocacy for Radical Transformation, which features interviews with Rob Ferrel, Tre Murphy, and Michaela Brown.

Collection was originated from UMBC’s collaboration with Dr. Nancy Kusmaul and the CoLab. Interviews were conducted by students, Deysi Chitic-Amaya, Kayla Brooks, and Lorra Toler through Webex video conferencing software and transferred to Special Collections, along with interview transcripts.
