Administrative/Biographical Note
Dr. Harry Marc Rowe (1860-1926) was an American businessman in Baltimore, Maryland. He started his professional career teaching at a commercial school named Duff College in Pittsburg, PA and moved onto a smaller Massachusetts business school named Curry College, which he later became president. While at Curry, Rowe also learned and worked in accounting houses and became very active in business education associations. Within a few years, he left his presidency to pursue accountancy. When Warren Sadler, a business school owner, visited Pittsburg in 1893, Rowe’s hoped to pitch a deal to exclusively write textbooks for Sadler’s schools, which Sadler accepted in March 1894. Four years later, after testing his materials in Sadler’s classroom, the Sadler-Rowe Company was incorporated and published practical accounting text in a workbook format. By 1911, Sadler-Rowe became H.M. Rowe Company and was closed in 2014. Rowe was an executive of the American Automobile Association (AAA) becoming its president between 1916-1918 and promoted road construction to Congress. He partnered with A/ T Carozza on road building projects and public work contacts in Maryland, later creating Carozza-Rowe Construction. Rowe had 4 children with 3 wives; Harry Jr, Hart, Earle, and Portia. All of his sons held positions in H.M. Rowe Company: Harry Jr. served as editor and was eventually vice president and Hart covered sales related work at schools and became secretary treasurer. Once Earle was old enough, he joined the company as well. When the US entered the war in 1917, Harry was forced to run the business alone. After returning from war, by early 1920, the Rowe sons were no longer part of the company. Harry Jr. was fired as treasurer of Rowe’s contracting business around 1924 and his other sons also distanced themselves from the company. Unfortunately, one of his sons attacked Dr. Harry M. Rowe by which he died.
