  6. Series VI: NEH Summer Institute for Teachers

    Date: 1983-1987

Description: “In order to promote excellence in the teaching of the history, culture, and literature of peoples of African descent, the University of Maryland Baltimore County has been awarded a grant by the National Endowment for the Humanities to offer a summer institute for secondary teachers.” (from a promotional brochure.) The Instituteswere held for one-month periods in the summers of 1984 and 1985. Included are files of budget materials, correspondence, promotional materials, course syllabi and handouts, information regarding field trips to museums and embassies, participant lists and the grant proposals. These files were not treated to the usually more rigorous weeding of most grant files because the totality of the documentation captures a moment in the history of Africana studies as a discipline when it was seeking to expand its presence into the high school curriculum.S

  7. Series VII: NIMH Racism Intervention Development Project

    Date: 1974-1977

Description: “The project is a federally financed program created to foster awareness of, and develop solutions for, the problems faced by blacks and other minorities in predominantly white institutions. The specific focus of the project is to test a training model for developing skills to reduce or eliminate institutional racism in higher education.” (The Retriever, 2/16/76, page 3.)Participants in the project were volunteers from all campus constituencies. Files include budget materials, correspondence, training materials for group sessions, background documents (clippings, articles, bibliographies), consultants(both scholars and firms), grant proposal and reports, and surveys of the racial attitudes of participants. Some of these last files, where the identity of the individual can be discerned, will be sequestered until_____.The arrangement is alphabetical. As with Series VI, this series is maintained more fully than is usual with grants, in this case becauseit offers a snapshot of a particular moment in the history of race relations both on the campus and in the country, of racial attitudes of the time, and of a particular approach to ameliorating the situation.
