| Abstract: | The collection includes recordings, sheet music, and other documents pertaining to Eleanor Hovda's career in music. Recordings include chamber music, dance music, and interviews held with various parties. The sheet music encompasses chamber works, dance works, choreography, and sketches. There are also videotapes of various performances. Other documents include concert programs, press releases, newspaper clippings, and biographical materials. The biographical materials are made up of photographs, resumes, biographies, notes, sketches, school reports, grant applications, and personal correspondence. |

Eleanor Hovda was a composer and a dancer, and produced many works for both chamber performances and for choreographers and dancers. She received her B.A. in Music and Piano Performance from American University in Washington, D.C. in 1963. In 1970, she received her M.F.A. in Performing Arts from Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York. Hovda taught extensively, with appointments including, but not limited to, Yale University, Wesleyan University, Princeton University, Bard College, and New York University.
This collection is arranged into three series: Series I. Events and publicity, 1935-2008. Series II. Dance works, 1966-2088. Series III. Chamber works, 1966-2007.
The collection was donated by Jeannine Wagar with assistance from Dr. Linda Dusman, and received by Lindsey Loeper in February 2014. Additional collection materials from the original donation were transferred from Dr. Linda Dusman in August 2014.
The collection arrived in eleven boxes and an inventory of the content of the boxes, prepared by Dr. Linda Dusman, was received upon arrival. Scores from the collection were digitized by I Resound Press prior to transfer to the Library. The original order of the collection focused on both item format and alphabetization. To make the research process easier for researchers, the decision was made to separate the print items from the audiovisual items. The print items have been organized chronologically. Documents for which there were more than two copies were weeded. The audio and video recordings were separated by whether the pieces were dance works or chamber works and ordered chronologically. Additional collection materials, which had been separated from the original donation, were added to the collection in Fall 2014. This donation contained two folders and one score binder. Processing was completed and finding aid written by Jordan Hartman, May, 2014, with assistance from Archivist Lindsey Loeper and UMBC professor Dr. Linda Dusman.

A number of the works referenced in this subseries are intended for both chamber ensembles and dance performances. These pieces are listed both here and in the Sheet music and manuscripts subseries II.B of the Dance series. These pieces are also marked with an asterisk (*). The items are grouped by work, and the works are sorted chronologically. There is some separation of documents due to size constraints, which has resulted in several works being pulled out of the chronological system. These pieces can be found in Boxes 11 and 12. This subseries is arranged by the work, not by chronology. The oversized pieces are listed at the bottom of the list.
