Administrative/Biographical Note
Joel Howard Swartz (1893-1971) grew up in Baltimore, attended Johns Hopkins University,
and held a Ph.D. in geology. He taught as a professor at multiple universities and
colleges, served on the atomic bomb project and other projects of national scale,
and worked as a consultant in geophysical prospecting for the U.S. Bureau of Mines.
He later joined the geophysical unit, and remained there until retiring in 1963.
