A formal department of African American Studies at UMBC was created in 1970 and began
offering a B.A. degree program in African American Studies to students in 1972.
This collection was transferred from the Africana Studies department in 1997 and the
Black Student Union in 1999. Accessions: UARC 1997-18, UARC 1997-21, UARC 1999-16,
Initial processing was completed by Project Archivist Jeff Karr in 2015. The records
have been sorted and arranged based on folder name and subject information. University
publications relating to Africana Studies are available under the call number UPUB
